The property owner is responsible for the installation, annual testing, and maintenance of the backflow prevention assemblies required on their system.

What is backflow?

The production and preservation of safe potable water is of the highest priority to Vandenberg Village Community Services District and once the water is placed into the public distribution system, every precaution must be taken to ensure that it does not become contaminated by outside sources. Once water has passed through the water meter to a consumer's premises, it becomes "used" water which, by law, the District cannot allow back into the public water system.

Back-siphonage is backflow caused by negative pressure (i.e. vacuum or partial vacuum) in a public water system or customer’s potable water system.  The effect is similar to drinking water through a straw.  Back-siphonage can occur when there is a stoppage of water supply due to nearby firefighting, a break in a water main, etc. A backflow prevention device is installed where back-siphonage is a threat such as large irrigation systems, pools, or water softeners.
